Jennifer Farmer and Nariman Yousefi, Co-Chairs of the student program committee, will welcome student delegates and provide an overview of the 2024 conference student program.
The target audience for this session is undergraduate and graduate students. However, all conference attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Keynote Speaker: Joule Bergerson
Joule Bergerson is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering, the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Energy Technology Assessment and a member of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. She directs an interdisciplinary and collaborative research team in the development of new methods for energy technology assessment, contributing to the development and broader use of systems tools such as life cycle assessment in the energy sector. Bergerson aims to make an impact through this work by releasing new tools and data to the public, to improve decision-making, especially in policy contexts. This includes the adoption of research results directly into policies such as California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard and policy relevant tools (e.g., U.S. GREET model). Researchers on Bergerson’s team collaborate with scientists, engineers, governments, and business leaders to develop and refine techniques particularly for assessing emerging energy technologies. These techniques help prioritize research and development activities, by identifying technologies – or optimal combinations of technologies – that could provide particularly large life cycle economic and environmental benefits.

During this 3-hour workshop, CJCE Editor-in-Chief João B. P. Soares will provide expert insight into the publishing world of scholarly and technical papers. In this workshop, you will learn how to efficiently prepare a clear and well-organized manuscript, how the peer review process works, how to expedite your manuscript’s review (and acceptance) as well as details about the publishing process, how to effectively promote your published paper, and future trends and developments in scientific publishing. For a preview of some of the themes that will be discussed, see Professor Soares’ recent article “Publication Tips: How to write scientific articles that master the publication process and communicate your ideas efficiently”, which is currently free-to-read. This workshop will also provide a hands-on opportunity for you to review and critique several abstracts and learn the elements that make an abstract effective and impactful. An e-certificate will be provided following the completion of the workshop.
Member rate: CAD $50
Non-member rate: CAD $65

It’s an exciting time to be a chemical engineer! As the demand for greener technology grows, chemical engineers are uniquely positioned to help develop cleaner processes and products. Chemical engineers use their knowledge and skills to design products and create processes that use materials efficiently and sustainably, ultimately meeting the demands of society without compromising on performance. In this workshop, we will begin by discussing key aspects of sustainability (e.g., Sustainable Development Goals, Life Cycle Analysis, decarbonization, net zero, green chemistry / engineering) and their relevance to the chemical engineering profession. You will then hear from professionals working in government, academia, and industry on how they apply these concepts in current projects. During the workshop, attendees will have an opportunity to reflect on how they can practice sustainability in their research, jobs, and everyday lives.

Landing your dream job goes beyond just getting an education, publishing in journals, or being the top of your class. It requires a combination of hard work, careful planning, networking, and perseverance. This workshop focuses on what students (undergraduate and graduate) truly need to know when applying for jobs, for example, what hiring committees look for when reviewing resumes (industry) and CVs (academia), what to highlight (and not highlight) on your resume/CV and during an interview, etc. You will also have an opportunity to listen and learn from professionals spanning different industries (academia, government, and private sector) about their journey in landing their dream job and to ask questions, both in an open discussion and 1:1 discussion.

The plant was constructed in the 1930s and commissioned in 1941. Dubbed “The Palace of Purification”, this
facility is a conventional filtration plant which was initially rated at a capacity of 100 million gallons (455 million
litres) per day. When the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto was created in 1954, a wider service delivery area was established to continue to provide an adequate supply of drinking water to a growing population. The plant underwent a series of expansions to achieve the current rated treatment capacity of 950 million litres per day (ML/d). It is Toronto’s largest water treatment facility.

Transitioning from Academia to the Workforce: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges for Equity-Seeking Students
Many students from equity-seeking groups encounter distinct challenges as they transition from university to the workforce. Although universities have developed various initiatives to support these students, similar levels of support may not be available in industry settings. This panel will engage in an open and honest discussion about the unique challenges and opportunities that equity-seeking individuals face during this transition. We will explore strategies for navigating workplace dynamics, fostering inclusive practices, and leveraging diverse backgrounds to drive meaningful change in organizations. Join us for a thought-provoking dialogue aimed at empowering the next generation of professionals.
Moderator: Prof. Jenn McArthur, Toronto Metropolitan University
Panelists:
Prof. Josephine Hill, Board Chair, Chemical Institute of Canada
Dr. May Marefat, Enbridge / Society for Women Engineers (Toronto)
Dr. George Jacob, DuPont
This meeting serves as an opportunity for Students and Student Chapter members to talk with CSChE Board Members and CIC staff. It is also an opportunity for Student Chapters to share challenges, successes, and ideas with one another.
More information to come.
