Canadian Regulators Approaches for Process Safety Management (PSM)
View date, time, and location on our schedule
In response to process safety incidents that occurred worldwide, the government, public, and industry in Canada have taken measures to protect the public and environment. This has led to the establishment of various regulations and the adoption of standards and best practices by regulators.
This panel discussion will explore the justification for regulatory intervention in relevant sectors, the legal frameworks that mandate these regulations, and the regulatory approaches and enforcement strategies that balance the need to reduce risks with other critical factors. By comparing regulatory approaches in Canada, this discussion aims to highlight the progress made and identify areas for future improvement

Canada’s PSM Journey – A PSM Award Alumni Discussion Panel
View date, time, and location on our schedule
Each year, the Process Safety Management (PSM) Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in Canada to Process Safety and Loss Management. Recipients of the award over the last 30+ years bring a diverse set of perspectives on how PSM has grown and evolved in Canada. In this discussion panel, we invite three PSM Award Alumni to discuss the PSM Journey for Canada: where it has succeeded, where we are witnessing positive change, and where we continue to need help to grow and push for progress.

Doug Baumann
Bio: Doug Baumann is a chemist, engineer and recovering pilot who’s been living the science life since 1999. His research career touched diverse fields such as solid-state physics, biochemical engineering, organic chemistry and biomedical engineering prior to shifting his focus to agriculture in 2011, when he joined Syngenta Crop Protection at their Honeywood Research Facility. Dr. Baumann undertook a variety of roles at Syngenta, always at the interface of chemistry, biology and engineering. In 2022 Doug joined Vive Crop Protection as Vice-President, Product Development and since 2023 has served as Vive’s Chief Technology Officer. Vive is a pioneer in the application of nanotechnology to agriculture, having gained the first ever US EPA and Health Canada PMRA approvals for the use of nanomaterials as delivery systems in crop protection. Vive is one of Canada and North America’s fastest growing companies, and one of Canada’s fastest growing clean tech companies.
Fei Luo
Bio: Fei is the co-founder and CEO of Liven, a startup transforming food and nutrition through sustainable, scalable bioactive peptides powered by precision fermentation. Prior to Liven, Fei was an environmental consultant at Ecometrix, where she introduced molecular biology tools to the energy and resource sectors, enhancing environmental decision-making and creating new revenue streams for the firm. Fei holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto, where she translated her research on anaerobic benzene degradation into real-world remediation applications. Passionate about sustainability and biotechnology, Fei entered the food industry after recognizing the critical role food plays in both planetary and human health.
Santiago Faucher
Bio: Santiago develops commercially viable chemical processes to transform resources into products. He is an expert in chemical and materials process and product development and has worked in the mineral, metallurgical, polymer, toner, coatings, cement, and biomass industries since 1993 on five continents. Santiago holds a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, is an inventor of over 60 U.S. patents, and has authored 17 articles and book chapters.
