CIC announces new executive director (Ian Jobe)

Dr. Ian Jobe, MCIC, has been appointed as the new executive director of the CIC and its constituent societies (CSC, CSChE, CSCT). Ian’s almost thirty years of experience in the chemistry and chemical science industry, background and experience in R&D and technology and non-profit leadership, governance, and management made him the best candidate to lead the CIC national office team. Ian will officially begin as the CIC executive director on January 2, 2018.

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) has announced its 2017 award winners which includes chemists Zhongwei Chen and Mark Lautens. The RSC has also named its new Fellows (including Dennis Hall, Mario Leclerc, Stephen Loeb, Milica Radisic, Laurel Schafer, Frank Wania and Jiujun Zhang) and members of The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (including Joule Bergerson, Frank Gu and Ute Kothe).

The 42nd annual Science Atlantic Chemistry Conference (ChemCon 2017) was held in St. John’s at Memorial University of Newfoundland May 4-6.The conference hosted more than 140 participants including undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals from academia and industry. Professional Chemists Sign Mobility Agreement

Professional Chemists can now transfer their professional registration between provinces across Canada. The Federation of Canada’s Professional Chemists (FCPC) announced today that provincial chemists’ organizations have adopted a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate mobility of professional chemists between provinces.

Record number of delegates at York U’s annual chemistry conference

The Department of Chemistry at York University in Toronto hosted the 45th Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) this past March. It was the largest-ever SOUSCC, with more than 135 speakers and almost 200 delegates. Some included first-time participants from the University of Ottawa and Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

This past March, the University of Toronto and the Chemical Institute of Canada co-hosted the annual Sector Info Night, inviting chemical engineering alumni from various areas of expertise to speak with undergraduates about their future career plans. This year’s speakers gave a brief presentation about their respective fields, which included: air quality control, environmental engineering, metallurgy, process engineering and consulting.
