Nomenclature101.com for Francophone students is an online tool developed at the University of Ottawa to fill in a significant learning gap caused by an inability to interpret and use the language of organic chemistry. Students should be able to name and draw simple molecules, give their names and identify functional groups, but often struggle to do so. This free, interactive, online bilingual learning tool draws on a database of 1,000 questions that allow students to identify key parts (functional groups) of a molecule, name a molecule and draw it. The tool also allows students to tailor their learning by customizing nomenclature quizzes that give immediate feedback. The tool is funded by the Chemical Institute of Canada’s Chemical Education Fund and uOttawa.
