Harry Gray, Arnold O. Beckman professor of chemistry and founding director of the Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology spoke to hundreds of university and high school students as well as the general public last October as part of National Chemistry Week. Gray’s lecture, “Powering the Planet: Solar Fuels,” presented solutions to the greatest challenge of the 21st century: replacing fossil fuels with solar fuels, such as hydrogen from water or methanol from water and carbon dioxide. His visit was organized by the Engaging Chemistry-Edmonton Distinguished Lecture Series.
