Symposium Themes
Quantum scale
At the “Quantum Scale” we push the boundaries of theory, computation and experiments. Topics include quantum algorithms tailored for chemistry, innovative methods in quantum chemistry, high-performance computational chemistry applications that deliver actionable results for experiment and industry. Experiments at the quantum scale such as quantum dots, single atom catalysis, the study of material at the atomic level or the study of quantum effects are also welcome.
Molecular Scale
In the “molecular scale” subtheme, focus is placed on how molecular structure dictates chemical reactivity and function. The program aims to highlight advances in molecular design, synthesis, catalysis, reaction mechanisms, and characterization techniques. Molecular-scale understanding drives progress in materials science, energy, catalysis, the environment and the life sciences.
Nanoscale
The Nanoscale sub‑theme invites symposia focused on the design, synthesis, manipulation, and advanced characterization of materials, structures, and phenomena operating in the 1–100 nm regime. This includes fundamental studies of nanoscale interactions, emergent size‑dependent properties, and the development of nanostructured systems for applications spanning electronics, photonics, catalysis, energy, biomedicine, and the environment. Contributions may be driven by experimental, computational, or hybrid approaches that deepen our understanding of matter and function at the nanoscale.
Macro- /Supramolecular Scale
The “Macro- and Supramolecular Scale” sub-theme invites symposia exploring the design, synthesis, processing, and/or advanced characterization of macromolecular and supramolecular systems, from underlying fundamental principles to applications in the biomedical, energy, catalysis, analytical chemistry, and environmental sectors, informed by experimental and/or computational approaches.
Human Scale
Chemistry at the “human scale” powers innovation for a sustainable ecosystem for people, other living organisms, and the planet — creating novel medicines, greener materials, sources of energy, cleaner air and water, and smarter technologies that protect health and care for our environment. This sub-theme invites symposia that advance understanding or apply a human level challenge in areas including diagnostics, agriculture, textiles and chemical biology.
Global Scale
Chemistry at the “Global Scale” explores how chemistry operates within interconnecting environmental, economic, and societal systems, from chemical innovation to policy and education. The theme examines approaches to addressing grand challenges, such as artificial intelligence, changing climate, chemical pollutants, peace and security, and resource and waste management. It also considers situated knowledge systems, community-driven science and intentionality in research design. Discussions on policy and science diplomacy are encouraged.
