Happy Open Access Week 2024! #OAWeek
In celebration of this annual international event, here is an update on Wiley’s recently signed transformational agreements with a focus on how these agreements and publishing open access can benefit authors, researchers, and the wider scientific community.
What is a transformational agreement (TA)? It is a partnership developed between a consortium or institution and a publisher to facilitate the transition towards open access. TAs make it possible for researchers to read content freely and provide funding to cover article publication charges for authors when an article is published open access.
Since our last CIC News story on Wiley’s first transformational agreement in Canada, a number of new agreements have been signed by Wiley with institutions and consortia across the globe. As of May 2024, 102 TAs have been signed, covering over 2,800 institutions and funders worldwide.[1] Wiley has also signed an additional agreement within Canada, besides the agreement with Canadian Research Knowledge Network Member Institutions, with the Federal Science Libraries Network (FSLN). With this agreement, article publication charges for primary research and review articles published by corresponding authors affiliated with FSLN institutions will be covered (articles must have been accepted on or after January 1, 2024). See more information on these agreements here.
As CJCE is a hybrid open access journal (a subscription-based journal that offers authors the option to publish their article open access) with a global readership and authorship, submitting authors from Canada and around the world can significantly benefit from these TAs. TAs benefit authors by:
- Providing full or partial funding for open access publication
- Permitting authors to publish articles without needing to arrange and manage author publication charges, as this is handled by the participating institution
- Supporting the transition to a more transparent and accessible research landscape
Publishing OA benefits authors because:
- OA articles can be read, cited, and shared by anyone, regardless of their subscription status
- Articles published OA receive more views, citations, and higher Altmetric scores
