The Environment Division (EN) of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) is collaborating with the Working Towards Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (WIDE) Member Resource Group of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) to promote work that enhances the diversity of ideas and people in Canadian environmental research.

This month they are happy to feature a photo collage submitted by Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh’s group at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU).

Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh (Centre Image) is leading the Environmental, Physical and Interfacial Chemistry (EPIC) lab at Laurier. Our research group is engaged in projects related to air quality monitoring and environmental remediation. In the air quality monitoring program, we aim to assess real-time pollutant data obtained from our local multi-sensor network to identify pollutant levels in different locations in the City of Kitchener. Research Assistants involved in this program include undergraduate student Austin Sammon (top left) and MSc student Wisam Mohammed (bottom left). In addition, quantifying the toxicity and biological activity of human pathogens in atmospheric particles is another focus in our group, which is led by PhD students Yara Khalaf and Uyen Le (top middle) and Uyen Le (bottom middle). Our environmental remediation research involves investigating the mechanism of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction on copper oxide nanoparticles. This research is led by MSc student Jason Hsu (top and bottom right).
