This summer, ChemEd 2013 — North America’s largest gathering of chemistry educators — will return to its roots. The biennial conference originated at the University of Waterloo in 1973, the brainchild of chemistry professor Reg Friesen and high-school teacher Leonard Sibley, well known for their efforts to promote chemical education. Waterloo went on to host the next four conferences. The image above is from 1977 and depicts future ChemEd organizer Irwin Talesnick doing a demonstration. Hundreds of teachers are expected to attend ChemEd 2013, which is sponsored by the CIC’s Chemical Education Fund. The event takes place July 28 to August 1, 2013.
