Sponsored by the CIC Analytical Chemistry Division
The Fred Beamish Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates innovation in research in the field of analytical chemistry, where the research is anticipated to have significant potential for practical applications.
Jennifer I-Ling Chen, MCIC
York University
Jennifer Chen earned her BSc in chemistry from Simon Fraser University in 2004. She received post-graduate awards from NSERC and completed her PhD in materials chemistry with Geoffrey Ozin at University of Toronto in 2009. After her NSERC post-doctoral fellowship at David Ginger’s lab at University of Washington, she joined the chemistry faculty at York University in August 2012.
Her group’s work focuses on tailoring the chemical and physical properties of materials for applications in sensing, imaging, energy conversion and optoelectronics. One major area of interest is the development of economical sensors and bioanalytical platforms for quantifying biomarkers to enable point-of-care diagnostics and biomedical research.
Chen is recognized as an Emerging Materials Researcher by the Canadian Society of Chemistry and a top 40 under 40 researcher by the Analytical Scientist magazine. She is also the recipient of the 2018 Award for Outstanding Early-Career Achievements in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Ontario from Nano Ontario.
