The Department of Chemistry at York University in Toronto hosted the 45th Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) this past March.

It was the largest-ever SOUSCC, with more than 135 speakers and almost 200 delegates. Some included first-time participants from the University of Ottawa and Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

Events included the “Sciex breakfast,” featuring keynote speaker Voislav Blagojevic, who discussed entrepreneurship for chemists. Another conference highlight was the banquet, held at the Underground, located in the heart of York University's Student Centre. The event offered not only good food and wine but a presentation from the Canadian Society for Chemistry.

The SOUSCC also featured 11 sessions in analytical, biomedical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. A total of 20 cash prizes were given out to the top presenters, with the judges giving high praise to the level of research being carried out by the young chemists.
