The 2020 winner of the Keith Laidler Award is:

Fiorenzo Vetrone
Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS)

Fiorenzo Vetrone received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Concordia University (Montréal, Canada). Following NSERC postdoctoral studies, he joined the faculty of Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Centre Énergie, Matériaux et Télécommunications (INRS-EMT), Université du Québec (Varennes, QC, Canada) in October 2010 as an Assistant Professor climbing the ranks to Full Professor in June 2018. A pioneer in the field of near-infrared excited rare earth doped luminescent nanostructures, his research interests center around their synthesis with the goal of developing multifunctional nanoplatforms, gaining a fundamental understanding of their photophysical properties and ultimately learn how to control, harness, and exploit the emitted light to facilitate their implementation in diverse applications including nanomedicine and theranostics. Dr. Vetrone has given well over 120 invited, keynote and plenary lectures at prestigious conferences, universities and summer schools around the world. Moreover, he has won a number of prestigious awards from NSERC, IUPAC, the Royal Society (UK), ASM International, etc. He was also awarded the Gladiatore D’Oro from the Province of Benevento (Italy), was an elected member of the Global Young Academy and most recently was elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada.
