The Chemical Institute of Canada Announces Appointment of New Executive Director

September 22, 2026, Ottawa, ON – The Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Paul Smith as its new Executive Director, following an extensive search conducted by the CIC Board of Directors. Dr. Smith will officially begin in the role immediately.
The appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the CIC and its constituent societies, the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE). The search process was thorough and highly competitive, reflecting the importance the Board placed on identifying an experienced and visionary leader who could build on the accomplishments of the organization while helping advance its mission and priorities for the future. Following a comprehensive process, the Board is confident that Dr. Smith brings the leadership, experience, and commitment needed to guide the CIC into its next phase.

With Dr. Smith joining the organization, the CIC looks forward to advancing its strategic objectives, strengthening the member experience, and supporting the growth and influence of Canada’s chemical sciences and engineering community. In the role of Executive Director, Dr. Smith will work closely with the Board, the CIC National team, members, partners, and the broader community to actively advance and promote its mission, ensure the long-term stability of its operations, and create new opportunities for its members across Canada.
“Having worked across Canada’s innovation and science ecosystem, including chemistry and chemical engineering, I’ve seen firsthand how important science and technology are to the country’s research and innovation future, across government, industry, and universities and colleges. I’m honoured to be joining an organization with more than 100 years of history at exactly the moment it’s building toward next year’s Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference, followed by the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress. I’m looking forward to working with the Board, the National Team, and our members to grow CIC’s impact, nationally and internationally, and to deliver real value across all of our stakeholders,” said Dr. Smith.
Dr. Paul Smith holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bath and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, and is currently an ICD.D candidate through the ICD-Rotman Directors Education Program. He spent a decade on Xerox’s Senior Leadership Team as Vice President and Director of the Xerox Global Materials Research Centre, and helped establish the Canadian Campus for Advanced Materials Manufacturing in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada. He previously served CIC as Board Chair and Interim Executive Director from 2019 to 2021, before joining the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics as Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer in 2021. Dr. Smith currently serves on the Board of Directors of Mitacs and the Executive Advisory Council of C2MCI. He is a named inventor on 78 U.S. patents, and was the 2024 recipient of CIC’s own Montreal Medal for significant leadership to the chemistry profession in Canada, as well as the 2023 recipient of the Canada Medal from the Society of the Chemical Industry.

Ottawa (Ontario), le 22 septembre 2026 – L’Institut de chimie du Canada (ICC) a le plaisir d’annoncer la nomination de M. Paul Smith au poste de directeur général, à la suite d’un rigoureux processus de recherche mené par le conseil d’administration de l’ICC. M. Smith entre en fonction officiellement et immédiatement.
Cette nomination marque un nouveau chapitre passionnant pour l’ICC et ses sociétés constitutives, soit la Société canadienne de chimie (SCC) et la Société canadienne de génie chimique (SCGCh). Le processus de recherche a été exhaustif et hautement concurrentiel, ce qui témoigne de l’importance que le conseil d’administration accordait à la recherche d’un leader expérimenté et visionnaire capable de consolider les réalisations de l’organisation tout en contribuant à faire progresser sa mission et ses priorités d’avenir. Au terme de ce processus approfondi, le conseil d’administration a la certitude que M. Smith possède le leadership, l’expérience et l’engagement nécessaires pour guider l’ICC vers sa prochaine étape.

Avec l’arrivée de M. Smith au sein de l’organisation, l’ICC a hâte de faire progresser ses objectifs stratégiques, d’enrichir l’expérience des membres et de soutenir la croissance et l’influence de la communauté canadienne des sciences et du génie chimiques. En tant que directeur général, M. Smith travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le conseil d’administration, l’équipe nationale de l’ICC, les membres, les partenaires et la communauté élargie pour promouvoir activement sa mission, assurer la stabilité à long terme de ses activités et créer de nouvelles opportunités pour ses membres partout au Canada.
« Ayant évolué au sein de l’écosystème canadien de l’innovation et de la science, y compris dans les domaines de la chimie et du génie chimique, j’ai pu constater de visu à quel point la science et la technologie sont essentielles à l’avenir de la recherche et de l’innovation au pays, que ce soit au sein du gouvernement, de l’industrie ou des universités et collèges. Je suis honoré de me joindre à une organisation qui compte plus de 100 ans d’histoire, précisément au moment où elle se prépare pour la Conférence canadienne du génie chimique de l’an prochain, suivie du Congrès mondial de chimie de l’UICPA. J’ai hâte de collaborer avec le conseil d’administration, l’équipe nationale et nos membres pour accroître l’impact de l’ICC, tant à l’échelle nationale qu’internationale, et offrir une valeur concrète à l’ensemble de nos parties prenantes », a déclaré M. Smith.
M. Paul Smith détient un doctorat en chimie de l’Université de Bath et une maîtrise en administration des affaires (MBA) de la Rotman School of Management. Il est actuellement candidat au titre d’administrateur de sociétés certifié (ICD.D) par le biais du programme de formation des administrateurs ICD-Rotman. Il a passé une décennie au sein de l’équipe de haute direction de Xerox à titre de vice-président et directeur du Xerox Global Materials Research Centre, et a contribué à l’établissement du Campus canadien pour la fabrication de matériaux avancés en partenariat avec le Conseil national de recherches du Canada. Auparavant, il a siégé à l’ICC en tant que président du conseil d’administration et directeur général par intérim de 2019 à 2021, avant de se joindre à l’Institut Perimeter de physique théorique à titre de directeur général et chef de l’exploitation en 2021. M. Smith siège actuellement au conseil d’administration de Mitacs et au comité consultatif de direction (Executive Advisory Council) du C2MCI. Il est l’inventeur inscrit de 78 brevets américains et a reçu en 2024 la Médaille de Montréal de l’ICC pour son leadership marquant au sein de la profession de chimiste au Canada, ainsi qu’en 2023 la Médaille du Canada de la Society of the Chemical Industry.
