Jonathan (Jon) Veinot, MCIC
University of Alberta![]()
Professor Veinot’s research advances the field of nanoscience while targeting the synthesis and tailoring the properties of abundant non-toxic nanomaterials. Jon joined the University of Alberta (UA) in 2002, and is a Professor in the Chemistry Department. He has served in roles including Associate Chair Research (Chemistry), Associate Dean Research – Grants and Innovation (Faculty of Science), and is now Associate Dean STEM Research in UA’s College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Jon’s research contributions have been recognized with international (DAAD Visiting Researcher Fellowships, Technische Universität München Ambassador Distinction, Burghausen Chemistry Award), national (Chemical Society of Canada Award in Materials Chemistry), and institutional (Faculty of Science Research Award, Commercialization Fellowship, Innovation Award) awards. He also leveraged his international network to support students and colleagues as a DAAD Ambassador and rallied a cross-disciplinary team from UA and Technische Universität München to establish the Alberta/Technical University of Munich International Graduate School.
Dr. Veinot has embraced leadership in the broader chemistry community serving as Chair of the Edmonton CSC Local Section, Chair of the Chemical Society of Canada Materials Chemistry Division, and Conference Chair for the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition. He was also Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Chemistry (Materials Chemistry), is now Associate Editor for the RSC journals Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances, and contributes to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology School of Applied Sciences and Technology External Advisory Committee.
Veinot co-founded, and is President and CTO of Applied Quantum Materials Inc. which received a provincial “Best in Sector” ASTech Award and answered Alberta’s urgent call for help during the pandemic by developing and producing COVID testing reagents.
