Presenter Background:

Ashley Craig is a certified Associate Human Factors Professional (AHFP), Global Ergonomics Program Manager at Microsoft (via SGS North America), and Adjunct Professor of Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Her career is dedicated to enhancing performance, safety, and system integration across high-risk, safety-critical industries. In her current role, she leads global ergonomics strategy across hybrid offices, labs, and advanced technology environments, aligning human-centered design with organizational innovation, inclusion, and employee wellbeing.
Her expertise spans aerospace, chemical, and industrial safety domains, with specialization in hazard mitigation, cognitive workload management, and human-machine interface optimization. She applies advanced methods in human reliability analysis and systems engineering to drive regulatory compliance, improve decision-making, and reduce operational risk.
Previously, Ashley served as Principal Human Factors and Process Safety Systems Engineer, integrating human factors into process safety within the chemical industry. Earlier in her career, she supported NASA’s Artemis Gateway mission as a Human Factors Engineer, where she led astronaut-centric design enhancements, usability testing, and system safety evaluations for spacecraft modules. She has also contributed to forensic human factors consulting and provided academic mentorship in doctoral-level research at Rice University.
Ashley holds a Master of Science with Distinction in Human Factors Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a Bachelor of Science in Communication Theory and Kinesiology from Sam Houston State University, blending technical expertise with a passion for advancing human-centered design in complex systems.

Abstract:

The 2024 update to the Human Factors in Process Safety Management (HF PSM) standard introduced important clarifications in language and intent, creating both opportunities and challenges for implementation across safety-critical industries. This session will provide an overview of the most recent updates with a focus on interpretation, alignment, and practical application.
Two to three standards will be selected and discussed in detail, with examples highlighting where they align across industries such as aviation, aerospace, and nuclear. The discussion will center on reviewing lessons learned from these industries and identifying best practices that can be applied in participants’ own workplaces. By examining how shared human factors principles are implemented in different operational environments, attendees will gain practical insights into strengthening safety culture, improving system performance, and ensuring compliance.
Participants will also receive a cross-industry standard alignment tool that maps human factors and process safety guidance, supporting benchmarking, integration, and knowledge transfer across domains.
