The Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) and the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) are appalled by the recent article published online as an Accepted Article by Angewandte Chemie International Edition. While the author of this article is a member of CSC, we strongly condemn his views on diversity and inclusion, which are absolutely not representative of the values of our society. Our organization will be internally discussing further steps to take concerning this individual.

Historically, science has excluded women and other marginalized communities. As students, teachers, researchers, and professionals in the chemical sciences, we recognize that this systemic exclusion and gatekeeping has deprived chemistry, chemical engineering, and chemical technology of talent and diversity.

These views remind us that while we have been making progress, the Canadian chemical sciences community must continue to advocate for and support equity groups in STEM. We must and we will do better.
