This past May at the University of Victoria, 80 scientists from across Western Canada spent three days sharing their knowledge at the 2014 Western Canadian Undergraduate Chemistry Conference. Guest speakers included Darren Johnson of the University of Oregon, Dennis Hore from the University of Victoria, David Vocadlo from Simon Fraser University and Stephen Campbell from the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation. Undergraduate students also gave oral and poster presentations. Conference highlights included “That Chemistry Show,” which made the most of the flashy side of chemical reactions. UVic’s Alexandre Brolo, pictured above, whipped up chemistry magic with coloured liquid and dry ice to show that colour changes indicate chemical transformation.
