The CIC’s professional development courses are set for Sept. 17-18, 2013 in Toronto. The application deadline for this year’s CNC-IUPAC awards is Oct. 16, 2013. Established in 1982, the awards help Canadian scientists and engineers who are within 10 years of earning their PhD present a paper at a Canadian National Committee for the International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry-sponsored conference outside Canada and the United States. The application deadline for the 2014 CCUCC Chemistry Doctoral Award is Sept. 14, 2013. The award acknowledges outstanding achievement and potential in research by a graduate student whose PhD thesis in chemistry was formally accepted by a Canadian university in the 12-month period preceding the nomination deadline. The It’s Chemistry, Eh?! annual competition is just around the corner. This popular YouTube contest challenges students in Canadian high schools to communicate chemistry concepts in a fun and creative way. Suggested topics include the benefits of chemistry in everyday life and busting a commonly held myth about chemistry. Submissions are judged on educational value, accuracy of content, quality of information, ability to effectively communicate ideas, creativity, relevance to the theme and production value. The winners receive prize money to put towards their education. The submission period is from Oct. 15 to Nov. 29.
