In Sept. 2016, the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) established the CSChE Student Chapter Grant Fund, which provides up to $300 in support for student chapter initiatives and scientific endeavours.
The University of Alberta Chemical Engineering Students’ Society (ChESS) in Edmonton used their student grant to host a professor-student social on Nov. 16, 2016, which was attended by about 50 students and 10 professors. This event allowed them to connect outside of the classroom, sparking discussion about university research and the associated opportunities for undergrads, the potential benefits of graduate school, as well as the career paths available to graduating chemical engineers. The student chapter plans to expand this event in the future by inviting chemical engineering professionals to participate.
Other 2016 Student Chapter Grant recipients include the universities of Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa and McMaster CSChE student chapters. To learn more about the grant, visit www.cheminst.ca/student-chapter-grants.
