National Chemistry Week (NCW), the annual week-long celebration of the chemical sciences in Canada, takes place Oct. 19-26 throughout the provinces and territories. It’s a chance for youth and adults to explore the wonders of chemistry through hands-on experiments, games, demonstrations, lectures and exhibitions.

Maxxam Analytics has been an enthusiastic corporate participant in NCW since 2011. It established a volunteer Water Experiment Team that conducts experiments with Grade 4 to Grade 10 students to teach them about acidity at home and in the natural environment. Called “pH of the Planet,” the sessions have students work in pairs or small groups to measure the pH of water from local sources such as a river, lake or pond. The students also measure the pH of common household fluids. Contact wet@maxxam.ca to enquire about having a team at your school.
