Last Thursday, January 24, the Toronto CIC Local Section hosted their annual Student Awards Night at Ryerson University. The evening was held to celebrate the academic achievements of post-secondary students across the GTA. There were two categories of prizes: the CSC/CSChE/CSCT Silver Medals and CIC Book Prizes. A Silver Medal is awarded to students who have displayed outstanding academic merit by achieving the highest GPA in their respective program. A Book Prize is awarded to students who have shown significant improvement in their field of study. The list of individual winners can be found below.
The night began with a welcome address from CIC’s Career Development Leader Laura Reyes, who gave a brief overview of CIC’s events and membership benefits and opportunities. A guest lecture was delivered by Hui Peng, a professor at the University of Toronto who leads a research group in environmental chemistry with a biological focus. His talk was entitled Searching Unknown Pollutants with the Analytical Chemistry Toolbox, and he told us about the research his group does which includes analyzing pollutant molecules in house dust and beluga whales! The evening was hosted by CIC Toronto Academic Liaisons Nesrin Vergun and Mary Zhen, with Vice Chair Jay Bassan handing out the awards.
