More than 100 students, researchers and industrial representatives came together at the Hyatt Regency Toronto this past April 7 for the 6th Annual CIC/SCI Canada Seminar and Awards Dinner. The event kicked off with an afternoon seminar, “Green, Clean and Sustainable Chemistry,” which emphasized the 2016 event theme: Innovation through Collaboration. Speakers John Blachford, of Blachford, Inc., Hamdy Khalil, of Woodbridge Foam Group, Emily Moore of Hatch, Gordon Knight of Trojan Technologies, Domenic DiMondo of GreenMantra Technologies and Robin Rogers of McGill University provided educational and informative presentations that highlighted the connection between industry, academia and industrial innovation.

The awards dinner honoured the 2016 CIC/SCI Canada Award recipients: 

  • John Blachford, FCIC – Canada Medal;
  • Marvin Devries – International Award;
  • Emily Moore –  Kalev Pugi Award; 
  • Hamdy Khalil – LeSueur Memorial Award; 
  • Vicky Sharpe – Purvis Memorial Award.

The 2015 CIC/SCI Canada Student Merit Award Winners, Canada’s highest performing B.Sc. and B.Eng. graduates from chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering programs were also invited to attend the awards dinner. Purvis Memorial Award winner Vicky Sharpe closed the banquet with an inspiring keynote address about her early job experiences and her time at Sustainable Development Technology Canada and provided advice to those starting their careers.
