Hermes Chan speaks at the Evening with Industry event in Halifax.

On Oct. 20, 2016, the Maritime CIC Local Section hosted its inaugural Evening with Industry at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. This career and networking banquet provided students with the opportunity to meet with chemical companies such as BioVectra, Medmira, GreenCentre Canada, Solid State Pharma, VWR International, Appili Therapeutics and DSM Nutritional Products. The evening also featured guest speaker Hermes Chan, CEO and co-founder of Medmira, a company that focuses on the development and delivery of advanced rapid diagnostics and technology. Chan is an alumnus of Acadia University in Wolfville, NS, where he started his business. The 60 students in attendance represented various Maritime universities, including Dalhousie, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Mary’s and New Brunswick. The event was well received by both student and industrial participants. “It was an excellent opportunity for the students to practice networking skills while learning about career options in the Maritimes,” says Maritime CIC Local Section chair Stephanie MacQuarrie of Cape Breton University. “I hope we can provide more events like this one for our students. We’ve already had requests to do it again next year.”
