To further enhance your IUPAC | CCCE 2021 experience the CIC has created a custom virtual conference world in Gather.town. Conference social events, award celebrations, poster sessions, and the virtual exhibition will take place in this world. In Gather.town you can wonder around, bump into colleagues, meet for a quick chat, and browse exhibition booths and posters just as you would at an in-person conference.

There are very few things that you’ll need to get started in Gather.town. You’ll need an internet connection and a web camera and mic, just as you will for the rest of the virtual conference. You’ll also need to sign in to Gather.town; no account needed. Sign in, choose your avatar, and Gather.town will save your information. You can find the IUPAC | CCCE 2021 Gather space by following the links provided from our main virtual conference platform.

You’ll enter the IUPAC | CCCE 2021 Gather.town world just in front of our information desk, where we’ll have any information about the conference that you need. Once you’ve entered this 8-bit world you move around just as you would in an old 8-bit video game; use the arrows on your keyboard to navigate and use X to interact with objects. In public spaces approach another person to start a video chat, or enter private (highlighted) areas, such as social lounges, tables, and the square around an exhibit booth or poster, for private conversations.

Live poster sessions will take place in Gather.town Poster Halls every evening of the conference at 6:30 PM ET starting on Aug. 16, 2021. During the live poster sessions, you can interact with the poster presenters in real time. During this time, you can also explore the exhibition hall and network with exhibitors in real time, join scheduled social events in the social lounges, or organize your own impromptu social events using some of the social and game spaces.

We know that it might have been a while since your Atari and Space Invaders days. In case you’re feeling a bit rusty on how to interact with an 8-bit game, we’ve created a more detailed guide to using Gather.town for our conference attendees. Read How to Navigate Poster and Social Sessions if you’d like more information, and if you need help while you’re in the Gather space find an avatar with CIC after their name.
