The Pharmaceutical Industry and the Role that Chemists Play

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the largest employers of chemists in the world, and there are many different roles that chemists can play in the drug development process. How are new drugs discovered? How do they get manufactured on a large enough scale? What steps are required to bring a drug to market?

This talk is designed to give a brief overview of the various stages of the drug development process, with a particular focus on the different roles that chemists play at each stage. This talk is designed to give students an introduction to the types of jobs they could pursue in the pharmaceutical industry after graduating with a B.Sc, M.Sc. or Ph.D.

About Nicholas Morra:

Nicholas Morra obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario in synthetic organic chemistry where he then moved on to become a senior chemist at Piramal Healthcare. More recently, he was an independent consultant for Tobira Therapeutics, and has transitioned into starting his own company, “AcuPharma Solutions Inc.” and has been running his company for the last 5 years!
