Molecular spectroscopy of azulenes and DNA biophysics
I will present my group’s latest efforts on understanding the photoexcited dynamics of molecular interactions. We are particularly interested in identifying singlet fission (SF) from upper excited states in molecules that have not previously displayed this effect, such as azulenes. SF is a process in which two triplet excitations on separate molecules are generated from an initial singly-excited molecule. This process promises to increase the efficiencies of solar cells and other light-harvesting devices by generating multiple charge carriers from a single incident photon. I will also mention our recent biophysics work on combining DNA origami scaffolds with cyanine dyes and metal nanoparticles.
