Biography

Dr. Jean-Michel Lavoie is a full professor at the Department of chemical and biotechnological engineering from the Universite de Sherbrooke. He is the founder and director of the Biomass Technology Laboratory and he and his team are totally dedicated to supporting the Canadian industry operating in this sector. His team recently got access to a brand-new state-of-the-art building dedicated to his team’s work and located on the main campus of the UdS. At this point, he had the opportunity to collaborate with many companies, including but not limited to GreenField Global, Hydro Quebec, L’Oreal, McInnis Cement, ReSolve Energy, CelluFuel, Boralex, Krown Corp, Cascades, Enerkem, CRB Innovations etc. He leads a team varying from 30-50 students and professionals and the lab’s annual budget is in the magnitude of 5M$. In 2021, he started the very first industrial chair on maple syrup technologies (CRITA). He represented Canada at the ART-Fuel forum of the European Commission for 4 years (2016-2020) and for the last 4 years, was co-chairing the NSERC discovery grant committee in process engineering. He published more than 100 papers and reports and among the IP that was developed, some technologies led to start-up companies (such as ReSolve Energie).
