Title: Life as a Discipline-based Education Specialist: Supporting Chemical Education at the Departmental Level

Abstract: What does the portfolio of a former faculty member who has transitioned to a faculty support staff role look like? In this talk, I will outline what a discipline-based education specialist at UBC is and discuss three ongoing projects. First, work within my own teaching: the use of specifications grading in a third-year chemistry communication course. Second, work in course support with research in using exam wrappers (i.e., midterm reflection surveys) for a second-year analytical chemistry course. Third, work in a departmental initiative with Phase 1 of the development of a peer review of teaching protocol.

Biography: Emma Davy is currently a Science Education Specialist in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (cross-appointed with the Skylight Centre for Learning and Teaching).  Emma’s background is first as a synthetic chemist having worked for Dr. David Berg and Dr. Robin Hicks at the University of Victoria and Dr. Deryn Fogg of the University of Ottawa.  Since graduation, Emma has worked in chemical education as a teaching post-doctoral fellow and faculty member at Quest University Canada, a sessional instructor at Thompson Rivers University, and time teaching high school chemistry before arriving at UBC.
