Juewen Liu was trained in analytical and bioinorganic chemistry for his PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005, and his postdoctoral research was related to nanomedicine at the Sandia National Labs and the University of New Mexico. He joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo in 2009. He is currently a full professor there and holds a University Research Chair. Liu has established a rigorous research program with international reputation. His expertise involves bioanalytical chemistry, catalytic DNA and aptamers, and biointerface chemistry. Liu’s work on DNA-based metal sensing was recognized by the Fred Beamish Award in 2014 and he also received an Early Researcher Award from Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation in 2010. Since 2002, Liu has published over 200 papers, receiving over 16,000 citations (H-index of 56).
