Sponsored by Ryerson University, Department of Chemical Engineering
The Award in Design and Industrial Practice is presented for innovative design or production activities accomplished in Canada.
The 2020 winner of the Award in Design and Industrial Practice is:
Xiaotao Bi, MCIC
University of British Columbia
Dr. Xiaotao (Tony) Bi received his BASc and MASc from Tsinghua University, and PhD from the University of British Columbia (UBC). He worked as a postdoc at UBC and Polytechnique Montreal, and as a scientist at Natural Gas Technology Centre in Quebec. He is currently a professor in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department and a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering and Engineering Canada. He has been the director of the UBC Clean Energy Research Centre, director of China-Canada Bioenergy Centre, and the manager of the Fluidization Research Centre.
His research has been focused on particle technology, fluidization, multiphase reactors, biomass thermo-catalytic conversion, life cycle analysis, and integrated assessments of clean energy systems. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, with a Google h-Index of 61. He invented technologies on biomass gasification, torrefaction and pyrolysis, solids waste treatment, water flow diagnosis tools for fuel cells, catalytic NOx reduction, novel designs for fluid cokers, and powder electrostatic charge monitoring and mitigation. He was the recipient of UBC Killam Senior Research Fellowship (2011) and AIChE Particle Technology Forum Lectureship Award (2012).
