Glen R. Loppnow is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and the inaugural associate dean, learning and innovation, in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. Previously, he has been a visiting staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory, faculty associate with University Teaching Services at the University of Alberta, and associate chair (undergraduate) in chemistry. He is also co-founder and chair of the Board for Onlea Corp., a non-profit company devoted to developing quality online learning opportunities. During his career, Loppnow has focused on spectroscopic characterization of excited-state structural dynamics and the resulting photochemistry in biomolecular systems, particularly in nucleic acids. In teaching and learning, he has a deep passion for developing evidence-based experiential and authentic learning opportunities for undergraduate students, and has taught introductory to graduate courses. He is a recipient of a number of University of Alberta teaching and research awards, and currently occupies a Vargo Teaching Chair (2009-present) at the University of Alberta. In 2009, he was named one of Canada's 3M National Teaching Fellows, the highest teaching honor in Canada.
