Marcel Nooijen was born in The Netherlands in 1963 and received his PhD in 1992 from the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, working on The Coupled Cluster Green’s Function. His supervisors were the late Jaap G. Snijders and Evert-Jan Baerends. In 1993 Nooijen joined the group of Rodney J. Bartlett at the University of Florida as a postdoctoral associate, working on a variety of problems in coupled cluster approaches for properties and excited states. In 1997 he became assistant professor at Princeton University, and in 2003 he moved to the University of Waterloo, as an associate professor. He gained tenure in 2005 and became full professor at Waterloo in 2014. In 2003 Marcel received the annual medal from the International Academy of Quantum Molecuar Science (IAQMS) - “for his contributions to the many-body treatment of the electronic structure of molecules, particularly his use of double similarity transformations to generalize coupled-cluster methods for excited states" - and in 2016 he was elected a member of IAQMS. His main research activities concern the multirefence problem in electronic structure theory, vibronic coupling theory and simulations of molecular spectra, and most recently path integral approaches to statistical mechanics for non-adiabatic problems, and use of vibronic models in transition state searches.
