Chemistry Conference Hosts Future of Chemistry Forum

The Canadian Society for Chemistry - Science Policy Forum The Future of Chemistry, featuring five leaders in the field of chemistry, was held during the 97th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition in June. The panelists provided their thoughts and visions on the future of chemistry from academic, industrial, and governmental perspectives.  Issues discussed included academic preparedness for the current needs of the chemical industry, the impact of industry-academia collaboration on students, and the subsequent economic benefits.

The Chemistry of Stress Cards

The “stress measurement spot” is a tiny pocket containing liquid crystals, which change colour depending on temperature.

Liquid crystals are molecules that arrange themselves in different patterns, depending on temperature. Each pattern reflects light in a different way, which we perceive as a colour change. They can be made sensitive enough to detect changes as small as 0.1 degrees Celsius.

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering (CJChE) Impact Factor for 2012 has increased 34% from 0.748 to 1.003. In addition to this we are elated to announce that Professor João B. P. Soares, FCIC, CAIP Chair in Interfacial Polymer Engineering for Oil Sands Processing at the University of Alberta, has been appointed to a second 5-year term as the Editor-in-Chief of CJChE.
