The 2012 winner is:

Todd Lowary, MCIC

Todd L. Lowary received his BA in chemistry from the University of Montana in 1988 and obtained his PhD in organic chemistry under the supervision of Ole Hindsgaul at the University of Alberta in 1993. He carried out postdoctoral research with David R. Bundle at the University of Alberta from 1993015–1995, and then with Morten P. Meldal at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark from 1995-1996. In 1996, he took a position in the Department of Chemistry at Ohio State University as an assistant professor and in 2002 was promoted to associate professor with tenure. In 2003, he returned to the University of Alberta where he is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and a member of the Alberta Glycomics Centre, a group of ten principal investigators at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary who work in the areas of carbohydrate chemistry and glycobiology.

This award is presented to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of medicinal chemistry through research involving biochemical or organic chemical mechanisms.

Deadline: July 2 of every year

Sponsor: Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Canada) Incorporated

Award: A framed scroll and $2,000 cash prize to cover travel costs and conference registration.

The recipient will be required to present an award lecture at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

Membership in the Institute is not a prerequisite for this award.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

  • Chair of the Organic Chemistry Division

The award shall be presented annually unless the Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.
