Woodbridge Foam Corporation is a global supplier of innovative polyurethane and expanded polypropylene components and associated services for the automotive, industrial and consumer goods industries. For the automotive industry, Woodbridge offers a range of products and services including: seat cushioning, structural seat frames, head restraints and interior soft trim, headliner substrates and cargo management systems as well as technical foams for personal care and industrial applications.

With its partners in the World Polyurethane Alliance™, the company supplies customers throughout Europe, North and South America, Japan, Korea, China and South Asia. The World Polyurethane Alliance is a united collection of leading urethane manufacturers offering design, engineering and manufacturing, in more than twenty countries

The firm’s global presence is supported by research and development activities, which continue to be headquartered at the first facility, located just outside of Toronto, Ont. The organization’s effort, under the leadership of Hamdy Khalil, Global Director of Research and Product Development, has been aided by provincial government support and the strong sciences foundation provided by the province’s education system. Woodbridge Foam Corporation‘s focus on green chemistry and clean technologies dates back to its start in 1978 and was identified as being a key initiative, not only to address what the company saw as emerging customer and society needs but also as an element of it’s own business platform that recognizes health, safety and environmental stewardship as being fundamental in all of it’s activities.

Award: An etched glass trophy and a certificate provided by CGCEN

Eligibility: The Ontario Green Chemistry and Engineering Award (Organization) is presented to an organization (not-for-profit or profit) which is based in, or which has significant investment in Ontario and which has made significant contributions to the field of green chemistry and engineering, including the technical, economic, human health and environmental benefits. The organization may be from industry, government, or academia or a not-for-profit in Ontario.

Criteria: Preference will be given to those that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Has the initiative resulted in the reduction in toxics use within an industrial facility or sector?
  • Does the initiative have the potential to reduce toxics use within a facility or sector?
  • Has the initiative resulted in reduced emissions or have the potential to reduce emissions of a toxic substance (specific to the Toxics Reduction Strategy)?
  • Does the initiative have the potential to save money / provide a competitive advantage to a facility or sector if implemented?
  • Does this initiative have the potential to brand Ontario industry as a leader in this area of green chemistry or engineering? (For example, is this something that Ontario can export or license as technology or intellectual property?)
  • Has the initiative provided a means to assess safer alternatives?
  • Has the initiative enhanced the public’s understanding about green chemistry?
  • Has the initiative resulted in a change in consumer behaviour and demand for safer alternatives?
  • Has the initiative resulted in any collaboration of industry and academia in driving a research agenda to address gaps and barriers in green chemistry and engineering?
  • Has the initiative raised awareness of industry of opportunities to implement green chemistry and engineering?
  • Does the organization follow the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry or Principles of Green Engineering.

The award shall be presented at one of the Chemical Institute of Canada’s (CIC) annual conferences, an independent conference or symposium organized by the CIC or an event chosen by the CGCEN. A representative from the winning organization will be offered the opportunity to present an award lecture. The award shall be presented annually unless the Selection Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.

Application: Submit the nomination package, as outlined on the nomination form to the CGCEN Awards Manager.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.
